Job Title: NDT Ultrasonic (UT) Inspector
Pay Rate: $30 - $65 per hour
Job Type: Contract (1-year term, with a likely extension)
Location: Devens, MA (ONSITE)
Schedule: M-F 7:00AM - 3:30PM
Job Summary:
The NDT Ultrasonic (UT) Inspector will perform ultrasonic inspections on weldments and other components to support manufacturing operations and R&D for the SPARC project. This role ensures that all inspections meet internal and industry standards while maintaining a focus on safety, quality, and accuracy. The inspector will also mentor trainees, collaborate with NDT Engineering, and assist in developing inspection procedures and technical documentation.
Job Responsibilities:
* Perform in-process and final inspections of austenitic steel weldments using phased array ultrasonic techniques per ASME Section V and other applicable standards.
* Assist in training and providing oversight to ultrasonic trainees.
* Support the preparation of NDT techniques and procedures.
* Collaborate with NDT Engineering and support R&D UT examination efforts.
* Prepare and document detailed inspection reports and nonconformances as needed.
* Analyze and interpret inspection and NDT requirements for austenitic steels, copper, titanium, and other alloys.
* Review and approve inspection and material test reports from vendors.
* Review blueprints and documentation to ensure appropriate materials are used and specifications are followed.
* Interface with technicians on quality issues and provide guidance on interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
Required Qualifications:
* High School Diploma required.
* 10+ years of NDT experience.
* Previous NDT Level 2 Certification in UT, UTPA per ASNT SNT-TC-1A or ISO 9712.
* Completion of 80 hours of ultrasonic Level 1 & 2 training.
* Completion of 80 hours of PAUT training.
* Minimum of 3 years inspecting steel welds using conventional and phased array ultrasonic techniques.
* Strong knowledge of relevant codes and standards (ASME Section V, VIII.2, ASTM NDT standards).
* Ability to set up, maintain, and use a variety of ultrasonic examination equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Previously passed a Performance Demonstration Qualification (PDQ) for UTPA by ASNT, AWS, API, EPRI, or another recognized third party.
* Experience in power, petrochemical, and/or aerospace industries.
* Experience examining austenitic steel welds.
* Experience using refracted longitudinal wave modes.
* Additional NDT certifications preferred but not required.
* Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
* Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
* Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, stooping, climbing, and sitting for extended periods of time.
* Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
* Willingness to occasionally travel or work nights, weekends, or on-call as needed.
