Overview:
Our client, a global leader in advanced manufacturing and powertrain technologies, is seeking an experienced Associate Director of Plant Maintenance to lead maintenance and reliability operations within a highly automated manufacturing facility in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for a proven maintenance professional who thrives in complex manufacturing environments and has a passion for driving Operational Excellence, Lean Manufacturing, and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). The successful candidate will inherit a large and diverse manufacturing operation consisting of approximately 450 fabrication and inspection assets plus over 400 assembly-related systems, including:
- CNC machining centers
- Gear manufacturing and finishing equipment
- Robotics and automated assembly systems
- Heat treat and induction hardening equipment
- Precision inspection and metrology systems
- Automated washing and material handling equipment
This role is ideal for someone who has successfully transformed maintenance organizations, improved equipment reliability, and developed high-performing teams in a demanding manufacturing environment.
Position Summary:
- This is not a developmental role. We are seeking a hands-on leader who can quickly assess current systems, identify opportunities, and drive meaningful change from day one.
- The Associate Director of Plant Maintenance is responsible for leading salaried and hourly maintenance teams in support of plant operations while championing Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Operational Excellence initiatives.
- This leader will oversee maintenance strategy, preventive and predictive maintenance programs, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement efforts with the goal of improving equipment availability, reducing downtime, and building a world-class maintenance organization.
Required Experience:
- 10+ years of manufacturing maintenance experience.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing maintenance teams in an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Experience leading salaried and hourly maintenance personnel.
- Proven success implementing Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience developing and managing preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Demonstrated success improving equipment reliability and maintenance KPIs.
- Strong background supporting CNC machining and automated manufacturing equipment.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in one or more of the following industries: Automotive, Powertrain or Transmission Manufacturing, Aerospace, Defense, Agricultural Equipment, Heavy Industrial Manufacturing.
Preferred experience with:
- TPM implementation
- Union manufacturing environments
- Robotics and automation
- CNC equipment
- PLC controls
- Heat treat operations
- Precision machining and gear manufacturing
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development:
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Supervisors, Maintenance Planners, and Maintenance/Reliability Engineers.
- Provide indirect leadership to 40+ hourly maintenance employees (5-7 Direct Reports)
- Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Drive employee engagement, performance management, and career development.
- Foster strong cross-functional partnerships with Operations, Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.
Maintenance & Reliability Leadership:
- Develop and execute maintenance strategies that improve equipment uptime and overall plant performance.
- Lead preventive, predictive, and scheduled maintenance programs to reduce emergency downtime.
- Improve equipment reliability through disciplined root cause analysis and permanent corrective actions.
- Optimize spare parts management and maintenance planning processes.
Drive improvements in:
- Equipment Availability
- Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
- Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)
- Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF)
- Preventive Maintenance Compliance
- Units Per Hour (UPH)
- Establish systems and processes that create sustainable improvements across the organization.
Operational Excellence & TPM: Serve as the site champion for Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).
- Lead TPM pillar activities including:
- Planned Maintenance
- Autonomous Maintenance
- Focused Improvement
- Equipment Reliability
- Coach teams on Lean Manufacturing principles and problem-solving methodologies.
- Lead Kaizen and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Utilize structured problem-solving tools such as: Root Cause Analysis, FMEA, 4D / 8D, A3 Problem Solving
- Partner with operations leaders to support the plant's Operational Excellence strategy.
Employee & Union Relations:
- Develop and maintain positive relationships within a union manufacturing environment.
- Participate in grievance resolution and labor discussions.
- Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
- Union experience is preferred but not required.
Education Requirements:
- Associate degree in Maintenance, Engineering Technology, or related technical field - OR - Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical discipline.
